Dubai

002_dubaiWhat can I say? It took quite some time for me to get my bearings after the 24-hour trip home. In Dubai, we rode camels, belly danced, and went four-wheeling on the sand dunes, where I was in between utter awe and stomach nausea. :)

We stayed in an unbelievable hotel adjacent to the Jumeirah, and in many ways everything here could be described as the oasis between reality and absolute fiction. We saw the tallest building in the world, beautiful holy people dressed in robes, a remake of Cairo, and islands being built by man.

I was moved and slowed down by the delectable food, warm air, awesome beauty of the scenery, and people. I was inspired by all the great teachers, enthusiasm, and understanding about yoga.

One day, I taught four private classes: one to teachers, one to the press, and two to consumers that won a spot through a raffle. I also did many interviews and photo shoots, and just really had a great time.

The next day we traveled to Abu Dhabi for a private event with a sweet woman named Debbie (an incredible artist) and the Hilton Gardens. I was very touched by the artwork Debbie gave me, and I still have it centered to focus on in our office. She was so supportive of me coming over and I loved getting the opportunity to connect to 100 more of her friends and students in beautiful and rich Abu Dhabi. We had a wonderful time, and I hope to go back to the Emirates as early as this year.

Thank you to the Emirates and all the residents!

Winter Tips

You may have been feeling it already-the days get darker earlier as we head into the shortest, coldest days of the year. It’s time to go deeply inside; to meditate, as well as recalibrate. Find out how the patterns in your life are working, or not working, and make those changes inside. Slow down, write more, get caught up and organized and prepare yourself for next year. Eat some raw garlic and ginger to prepare you for the changing weather, food, and holiday stresses. Make time to play with friends and celebrate with family.

Look through drawers and choose to either break out the old decorations or throw away the junk. Take a break from using the sprinklers. Paint or make some holiday gifts like bath salts, home sprays, beaded necklaces, and lavender eye pillows. Wrap your presents in the comic section of the newspaper, use recycled paper bags with bows, and paint your own cards or gifts.
Eat lots of greens, black sesame seeds, and black or wild rice to keep the kidneys nourished. Enjoy miso soups and orange vegetables such as yams or carrots. It also may be a time to have some wild salmon or organic chicken soup if your body is feeling it.

My 2008 mantra was Celebrate to Elevate; in 2009, it will be to Align with the Divine. It is time that we refine and allow our greatness to shine through. You are me and I am you. We are all already family. May we illuminate shadows, and make peace with our enemies. May we love ourselves and each other even more. May we be more of what we came here for.

Pay attention, respond, and enjoy.

“Presence is the real present.”

HAPPY HOLY DAYS!

001_amsterdam The next day we traveled to Amsterdam to shoot adidas TV. It was a fun group and a lot of work for a day, but we pulled it off. You should be able to see us on the adidas TV website in January. Click here to see another campaign I participated in, you can see really cool moves by dancers, gymnasts, and myself.

Alex and I strolled the city at night, looking at the canals and unique areas of the city. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the excellent dinner we had with the whole adidas TV team.

Detox and yoga tips with Rainbeau Mars We grill body and mind guru Rainbeau Mars about cleansing the mind, body and soul. Oh, we chat about her new Adidas range as well

So, tell us about your lemon, ginger root, olive oil and garlic detox.
This is a simple little lemon kick that’s done when you wake up on an empty stomach. Combine one cup of fresh lemon juice, one inch of ginger root, and one clove of garlic. Add one tablespoon of organic virgin olive oil and blend everything together. Wait at least half an hour and then consume your favourite herbal tea. (Use a tea that contains mint to prevent garlic breath.) Add nettles – they are high in iron and good for the kidneys – and red clover to purify the blood. Drink this for about 10 days, eating as you wish throughout the day, but avoiding bread, pasta and dairy products. Then take three days off, and repeat twice if you choose to.
But how does it work?
It lubricates the liver and causes it to dump some bile, which will better help you to metabolise excess fats and toxins in your body. It can be done 10 days in a row with three days off for up to 30 days. If coupled with eating lots of greens and eliminating liver-clogging things such as cheese and bread, you can expect to lose at least five pounds, clear your skin, increase energy, and feel rejuvenated.
What three things should people do every day to help themselves?
1. Give thanks in general and for the specific gifts that are in your life, including your body, the earth, and the air you breathe.
2. Clean your body both inside and out. Brush teeth, wash face, and stretch yourself open.
3. Eat greens or some foods grown from the ground and fed by the sun.
What’s the most difficult pose? Any tips on achieving it?
For me, the most difficult poses are ones that I have not done yet. But there are poses that I can do now that at one point I could not, so the trick is, take it step by step and see every attempt as getting closer to the goal. I think that’s the rule Einstein worked by! Breathe, stay aligned, protect your body, and approach yourself with a complete awareness that you are who you are becoming and not who you have been.

Ankles
Spread your toes regularly to re-energise puffy ankles.
Digestion
Colon hydrotherapy is great for chronic digestive issues. Acidophilus (ask your health store) products are great to maintain the good bacteria.
Eyes
Dark circles under eyes can indicate that kidneys are stressed. Drink a litre of nettle tea a day to help eradicate toxins.
Feet
Sand is one of the best exfoliators. Spread your toes as you walk to get maximum benefits.
Hair
Olive, coconut, and jojoba oil or shea butter are all great conditioners. Eat seaweed, black sesame seeds, green leafy vegetables like kale, and raw sunflower and pumpkin for shine.
Heart
Keep shoulders aligned at all times (this helps your heart work efficiently) and rub lavender and rose oil into your chest at night to reduce stress.
Hips
Avoid sitting with one knee over the other as it constricts energy flow.
Knees
Massage your knees with coconut oil for maximum nourishment.
Mouth
Celery, apples, carrots and mint tea are great breath fresheners.
Nails
Apply non-toxic natural nail polishes from health food stores.
Skin
Do facial acupressure by pressing cheeks, temples and chin. Provided you use a good SPF, sun, sea and sand are great natural beautifiers.
Stomach
Massage your stomach from right to left to remove stuck toxins. Flax seed oil is great for internal cleansing.
Throat
Singing is a great way to clear the throat, as is laughing. Consume raw honey and lemon juice for sore throats and gargle with salt water every day to kill germs.
Tongue
Ayurveda’s daily cleansing routine (Dinacharya), recommends scraping your tongue every morning to reduce toxins and cure mild bad breath.
